I realise this won't be published but I feel obliged to point out that Edward Jenner was ENGLISH, not 'British'.‘ 'Britain’, please note, is neither a country nor ‘British’ an ethnic identity. ’British’ and ‘English’ are not synonyms. There is no ‘British accent’ (in the sense of one standing for all the others). Had Jenner been Scottish you'd have said so. Unfortunately when authorities submerge England alone in a ‘Britishness’ Scots, Ulstermen and Welsh are supposedly part of but freely evade where it suits them they do so to imply responsibilities shared throughout these islands and camouflage the war being waged against one part of them.

Thank you for this article. I enjoyed it, learnt something from it and indeed share many of your misgivings. I just wish people - Americans in particular - would give us the courtesy of our right name in much the way they make a point of doing so with the Irish and Scottish ethnic groups they worship without knowing a thing about.
